Tom Strom Jr. was the test pilot for Bob's P-39. The first attempt to start the engine failed. Tom left the field to get his heavy-duty starter to start the engine. In the mean time, Bob flew his Top Flite gold edition Republic P-47. Before Tom arrived with the starter, Chris Dixon also flew his original jet. Bob Beatty attempted to maiden Chris's v-tail but could not control the plane once it was in the air. Tom arrived with the starter and the Airacobra's engine was started and the maiden flight began. At the end of the flight, Tom briefed Bob on the flying characteristics of the plane.
